Ismaning Reservoir: A Wastewater Lake changes its Feathers? At the Ismaning Reservoir, approximately an hour by bike northeast of Marienplatz, the interplay between humans and nature is evident. It is not possible to swim in the lake. But it does more than just store water for Munich’s power generation facilities. It also provides a habitat for many species.

Ecopolis München 2019: Environmental Stories of Discovery

Ecopolis München 2019: Environmental Stories of Discovery is an exhibition on Munich’s environmental histories. It showcases the final projects of students in the Environmental Studies Certificate Program of the Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society. The stories told in this exhibition ask: to whom does the urban world belong and what do we want the urban environment of the future to look like?

Malin Klinski received her bachelor’s degree in cultural anthropology, with a minor in communication studies, from LMU Munich in 2018. Her interest in environmental studies developed while participating in a seminar on human-environment relations in connection to natural disasters during her exchange semester at the Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. She is currently pursuing her master’s degree in intercultural communication at LMU. Being born in Munich, she has never stopped being enthusiastic about exploring unknown aspects of the environment of her hometown.

Schilling, Anne

Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich (LMU), Germany

Anne Schilling became part of the Ecopolis 2019 team when she was still quite new in Munich. It was a wonderful chance for her to get to know the city as a whole, detecting different interrelated stories and challenges. Anne joined the Environmental Studies Certificate Program because she was always interested in green spaces and nature per se. Now she had the chance to learn about and dicuss highly relevant topics regarding the environment and society in a very interdisciplinary and enriching academic environment.

Mark Stoll is professor of history at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas, and is working on an environmental history of capitalism. Stoll is author of two books, Inherit the Holy Mountain: Religion and the Rise of American Environmentalism (2015), and Protestantism, Capitalism, and Nature in America (1997), as well as chapters on the influence of religion on Rachel Carson and E. O. Wilson. He has edited “Nature and Human Societies,” a book series for ABC-Clio on world environmental history, and with Dianne Glave co-edited “To Love the Wind and the Rain”: African Americans and Environmental History (2006).
