Reading Silent Spring as a Challenge for Contemporary Environmentalism

Lawrence Culver wonders why, 50 years after the publications of Rachel Carson’s impactful book Silent Spring, there has been no other book that has come vaguely close to matching its impact. He asks whether this is due to shortcomings within environmental movements or whether the contemporary historical moment makes such influence more difficult to achieve. Culver argues that today’s environmentalists should emulate Carson’s lyrical clarity and ability to communicate complex scientific ideas in accessible, compelling prose. By clearly expressing their scientific knowledge and ecological values, he suggests environmentalists might once again make a persuasive case to a broad, international audience.
