Upon its publication in 1962, Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring highlighted the dangers of pesticide abuse and ignited a global ecological. The book’s impact extended beyond biology and ecology, influencing historians and sparking environmental awareness worldwide. In honor of the book’s 50th anniversary, the Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society (RCC) organized events including a digital exhibition, a plenary session at the American Society of Environmental History conference, and an international essay competition. The RCC’s efforts underscore Carson’s enduring legacy, inspiring diverse global perspectives on environmental issues. This volume commemorates Silent Spring, featuring essays and discussions reflecting Carson’s profound influence on environmental thought and action.
