Kupper, Patrick. Umweltgeschichte. Vol. 3, Neuere und Neueste Geschichte. Göttingen: Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht, 2021.
Environmental history is becoming increasingly important in research, teaching, and public outreach. This textbook explains central concepts, terms, and approaches of the field and outlines an environmental history of modern Europe on the basis of a number of selected topics. It puts the major themes of recent European history such as industrialization, urbanization, or imperialism into an environmental-historical perspective and shows how this both changes our view of the past and raises new research questions. Both students of history and trained historians—as well as anyone who wants to familiarize themselves with environmental history, its approaches, insights, and potentials—will benefit from this book.
Patrick Kupper is director of the Institute for History and European Ethnology at the University of Innsbruck and a former fellow of the Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society.
