US National Environmental Policy Act

On 1 January 1970, US President Nixon signed the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). The act marked the establishment of one of the first federal environmental agencies, and facilitated wide-reaching environmental laws that reflected a new environmental consciousness in the United States. NEPA also created the US Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) to advise the US President on environmental affairs, and established the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to oversee all legislation concerned with the environment.
