Mount Tarawera Eruption

The eruption of Mount Tarawera near Rotorua on New Zealand’s North Island covered 1,500 square kilometers with ash. As a result of the eruption, the natural landscape was transformed: the volcano’s original peak broke off and formed a three-part peak formation, a number of lakes were created, and several pre-existing lakes were greatly altered. Further, the popular tourist attraction, the Pink and White Terraces, was destroyed.
