Greenpeace

Since its foundation in Vancouver, Canada, in 1971, the NGO Greenpeace has promoted environmental causes using a combination of nonviolent action and press coverage. Leading campaigns have concerned issues including nuclear energy, whaling, climate protection, and genetic engineering. Greenpeace’s spectacularly staged protest actions often involve oceangoing ships. Greenpeace has been credited with, among other things, contributing to the end of the commercial whaling industry, the establishment of a nature reserve in the Antarctic, and the halting of the nuclear weapons testing in many areas. Today, the globally established NGO is supported by more than three million members. The organization has more than 1200 employees in over 40 offices worldwide.
