Stubborn Stuff: Translating Rubbish


Beginning with a fictional account of a visit to a landfill site with the author William Rathje, David-Christopher Assmann explores how rubbish is translated into (literary) text. Through a critical review of a passage cited in Jane Bennett’s book, Vibrant Matter: A Political Ecology of Things, Assmann explores the degree to which the material stubbornness of discarded objects is translated into (literary) text.
