Muir’s photographic essay uses images to explore Val Plumwood’s concept of “shadow places.” These are the physical sites of exploitation, pollution, and degradation that are the price we pay for desirable commodities and lifestyles in other parts of the world. The article exposes the webs of mobility and connectivity that link everyone and everywhere to these shadow places.
