Fred Metallic and Isaac Metallic are from the Mi’kmaq community. Fred, an academic researcher, activist, fisherman, and Grand Council member, highlights the importance indigenous resource management and the cultural significance of salmon. He demonstrates the need for sustainable practices and improving relationships within their territories. Isaac, an Elder from the Mi’kmaq community, tells the story of his family’s fishing history and the challenges they have faced from restrictive agreements. Even with extreme obstacles, he continued fishing, driven by a steadfast belief in treaty rights. Gradually, their community took over fisheries management, creating Rangers to oversee proper practices. Both discuss the importance of indigenous knowledge and rights in managing their resources and sustaining their cultural heritage.
