Three Gorges Dam

On 3 April 1992, China’s National People’s Congress (NPC) approved the “Resolution on the Construction of the Yangtze River Three Gorges Project.” Located at the Three Gorges site of the Yangtze River, China’s longest river, the dam project is the world’s largest and most controversial hydroelectric facility. The 650-kilometer-long reservoir that was created through the dam resulted in the relocation of more than a million people and has had a severe impact on the local biological diversity. Construction was completed in 2008.
