Opening of the Suez Canal

Constructed under French supervision, the Suez Canal, located on the western side of the Sinai Peninsula, connects the Red Sea at Port Tawfik in the city of Suez, with the Mediterranean at Port Said. The construction of the canal had a great environmental impact, particularly on the diverse marine ecology of the region. Currently, the Mediterranean is facing considerable problems due to the migration of invasive Red Sea species.
