Foundation of "Friends of the Earth"

In harmony with the anti-establishment spirit of the 1960s, David Brower (1912-2000), a former Executive Director of the Sierra Club, split from the more traditional Sierra Club in 1969 to found “Friends of the Earth.” The environmental network aimed to challenge the industrial way of life and to promote environmentally sustainable and socially just societies. Today, Friends of the Earth is an international network of environmental organizations in seventy-six countries with more than two million members and official supporters.
