First recorded notion of sustainable forestry

Because the increasing demand and production of timber for mining led to a drastic shortage of wood, the Electorate of Saxony mandated in 1560 that only as much wood could be cut as could be maintained for “constant and sustained” use. This is first known recording of the concept of sustainable forestry.
