Australian uranium mining

In 1944, serious excavation of uranium began in Australia to meet the demands of the US and British governments. The mining was facilitated by tax breaks. The first mining sites were erected in Queensland and the Rum Jungle in the Northern Territory. In the following decades, uranium mining became an important topic in Australian political discourse. Opponents cited a lack of environmental protection measures, the violation of the indigenous population’s rights, and nuclear proliferation as serious problems.
