In 2013, Christian Kehrt published one of the Environment & Society Portal’s first virtual exhibitions, “The Wegener Diaries: Scientific Expeditions into the Eternal Ice.” The exhibition was updated in March 2020 to make the exhibition responsive and archivable, with only minor changes to the presentation. This page contains links to PDFs of the original 2013 version of exhibition, scans of the original document, and selected transcribed and translated diary entries for archival purposes.

Ice Blink: Navigating Northern Environmental History

Northern Canada’s distinctive landscapes, its complex social relations and the contested place of the North in contemporary political, military, scientific and economic affairs have fueled recent scholarly discussion. At the same time, both the media and the wider public have shown increasing interest in the region. This collection extends our understanding of the environmental history of northern Canada—clarifying both its practice and promise, and providing critical perspectives on current public debates.

Elena Baldassarri is an Assistant Professor in North American History at the Humanistic Department of Roma Tre University, Rome, Italy. Natural Resources

Apart from a diverse and previously unknown fauna, explorations and receding ice caps have uncovered a sought-after abundance of natural resources in the Arctic region. Historian Elena Baldassarri argues that the exploitation of these resources not only constitutes a threat to the non-human world, but also to the Inuit people. This is a chapter of the virtual exhibition “The Northwest Passage: Myth, Environment, and Resources.”
