Making Masculinity: Land, Body, Image in Australia’s Mallee Country

Understanding the historical relationship between masculinity and the environment can shed light on how masculinity and ideas of nationhood and settlement are shaped by agricultural practices and the environment. In this paper, Katie Holmes explores the making of Mallee masculinity in the photography of Billy Boyd. Boyd’s photography captures and constructs a close relationship between men, the animals and machines they use for agriculture, and the Mallee landscape they inhabit and cultivate.
