Since 2008 more people have been living in the cities than in the countryside. Urban areas have become exciting sceneries where diverse groups pursue new ways of using, shaping, and experiencing. The book Stadt der Commonisten. Neue urbane Räume des Do it yourself (The City of Commonists: New Urban Spaces of the Do-It-Yourself) tells the stories of do-it-yourself activists who view the city as a newly evolving laboratory and contest conventional conditions of production and consumption through urban gardening sites, open repair workshops, fab labs, and share-and-swap events.Their goal is to create open and accessible common spaces and shared environments, where “real democracy” and the exchange of ideas and practices are possible and welcome, and where the concept of environment is not reduced to the requirements of a capitalist economy.

The book combines numerous analog colored photographs with dictionary texts introducing the key terms of the (environmental) commons.
