[110] 1.) Tiefe Temperatur; 2) Treibschnee 3) Mangel an Wasserdampf. No 1 habe ich bereits namentlich untersucht.

[110] 1) low temperature; 2) drifting snow 3) lack of water vapor. I have already investigated No. 1 specifically. Its influence is considerable, but not enough to provide an explanation on its own. I still lack data for No. 2, but I hope to be able to gather it when possible. No. 3 can be pursued mathematically. The influence here must once again be fairly considerable, since it is a well known fact that it is better to fill hot air balloons with moist air because it is lighter than dry air. The absolute water content of the air at low temperatures is very small, however, so the air must thus be heavier than at home.

1 February [1907]. Snowstorm! Gusty weather along with it, resulting in the barograph recording the most miraculous squalls, with the thermograph also producing the most wonderful fantastic lines. Apart from the meteorological appointments and the magnetic recording device, I have done nothing today, but in this weather it claims nearly all of one’s attention.
