[070] 1. Januar 1906 [sic!].

[070] 1 January 1906 [sic!]. The new year began simply with us all wishing each other a “glaedig Nytaar og Tak for de Gamle” over a glass of punch and some cake. Nobody made a speech. I can hardly imagine a German expedition celebrating New Year without the expedition leader taking the opportunity to say something about the results so far and about the further aspirations and outlook for the undertaking. I personally can be quite satisfied with my own results. I have not only been successful in establishing the meteorological station, but have also collected a significant amount of original material, in terms of both instrumental readings and observations, which I will certainly be able to build upon considerably. The 24-hour observation in the lookout barrel represents something completely groundbreaking, the significance of which will surely be recognized by meteorologists everywhere. The kite and balloon deployments in autumn achieved what could reasonably be expected of them. The maximum height of 2400 m is very respectable. Unfortunately, this activity was virtually impossible to continue
