Es ist eine eigenes Gefühl, daran zu denken. Ich glaube ich werde mein erstes Telegramm mit einer gewissen Bangigkeit absenden. Aber ich fühle auch, daß mich diese Empfindungen schwerlich abhalten werden, wieder hinauszugehen. Hier draußen giebt es Arbeit, die des Mannes wert ist, hier gewinnt das Leben Inhalt. Mögen Schwächlinge daheim bleiben und alle Theorien der Welt auswendig lernen, hier draußen Auge in Auge der Natur gegenüberzustehen und seinen Scharfsinn an ihren Rätseln zu erproben, das giebt dem Leben einen ganz ungeahnten Inhalt. Heute habe ich bei totenstiller Luft – jetzt weht es schon wieder – lange Zeit draußen gestanden und die Stille der Polarnacht genossen. Wie sie kalt und schweigend daliegen, diese harten

Today, in deathly still weather—though now the wind has started up again—I stood outside for a long time and cherished the silence of the polar night. How cold and silent they lie there, these hard
