Ist dieser Bogen parallel der Erdkrümmung oder ist es der Kreisbogen um den magn. Pol? Wäre das Nordlicht eine gerade Linie (d.h. der scharfe Unterrand ) so müßte es, da man die hier in Betracht kommende Horizontalfläche als eben ansehen kann, als größter Kreis erscheinen, d.h. die beiden Schnittpunkte mit dem Horizont müßten um 180° auseinanderliegen (im magnetisch E und W). Beim Heraufziehen des Bogens müßte die Lage dieser Schnittpunkte konstant bleiben. Dies ist nun alles nicht der Fall. Die beiden Schnittpunkte liegen mehr nach magnetisch S, und ihr Abstand ist, wie ich glaube variabel. Das Nordlicht präsentiert sich überhaupt nicht als größter Kreis, denn wenn die Mitte des Bogens den Zenit zuerst erreicht hat, so liegen die beiden Füße nicht wirklich von E nach W. Is this curve parallel to the Earth’s curvature, or is it the circular curve around the magnetic pole? If the northern lights were indeed a straight line (i.e. the clearly defined lower edge), they should then appear as a large circle, since one can consider the horizontal plane in question here to be flat, i.e. the two points of intersection with the horizon must be 180° apart (in the magnetic E and W). When the curve rises, the position of these intersection points must remain fixed. None of this is the case, however. The two intersection points lie more towards magnetic S, and their separation, I believe, is variable.
