[029] Respekt vor den Hundeschlitten bekommen. Wenn man es versteht, die Schnelligkeit der Hunde auszunutzen, so kann man wirklich viel erreichen. Man soll aber nur bei wirklich gutem Wetter fahren. Ich habe eine ganze Reihe kleiner, aber wertvoller Erfahrungen gesammelt. Wie man einen gebrochenen Schlitten repariert, wie man am schnellsten „Skauler“ [dän. Zugriemen] klart, wie man verhindert, daß die Hunde nach dem Halten durcheinanderlaufen (man muß sich auf die Skauler [Zugriemen] stellen, so daß die Hunde ganz kurz gebunden sind), wie man am schnellsten „Seeler“ repariert u.s.w. u.s.w.
Auch die Behandlung der Kamiker und des anderen Zeugs, der Schlafsäcke u.s.w des Zeltes, und zu guter letzt des Schlittenproviants mit seinen Vorzügen und Kombinationsmöglichkeiten u.s.w. In Bezug auf die Kleidung bin ich zu folgendem Prinzip gekommen; nicht vielerlei anhaben, nur die passende Tracht. Für uns war Hunde-timiak passend, und Windhosen und Orentrecks [?]- Kamiker. Ich hatte nur der äußeren Teil der letzteren und inverds meine Vandskinkamiker und 3 paar Strümpfe. Nachts soll man alles Pelzzeug ausziehen und nur

[029] a lot of respect for the dog sleds. When one has learned to use the speed of the dogs well, one can really achieve a lot. One should only travel in very good weather though. I collected a whole series of small but valuable experiences on this trip. How to repair a broken sled, how to free a “skauler” [Danish: ‘traces’] quickly, how to stop the dogs from getting tangled up once they stop (one has to stand on the “skauler” [traces] so that the dogs are held on a short leash), how to repair “Seeler” quickly etc. etc.
Also how to handle the kamik boots and other equipment, the sleeping bags, tent, and last but not least the sled provisions with their various strengths and possibilities for combination etc. With respect to the clothing, I have come to the following conclusion; don’t wear too much, just the appropriate dress. For us, dog timiak was suitable, and wind-proof trousers and Orentrecks [?]- kamik boots.
